Sir William Jones was working in India when he took up the unusual hobby of learning Sanskrit. ![]() Why are these words so similar? An eighteenth-century English judge wondered the same thing – and his attempt to answer that question essentially launched the field of historical linguistics. Take the word “brother.” In German it’s “bruder,” in Sanskrit it’s “bhrata,” and in Persian it’s “biradar.” One age-old indicator of a near-global connection is language. This may well be the case, but that doesn’t mean that connectedness is anything new. ![]() Many people will tell you that today’s world is more connected than ever before. ![]()

Crick is making herself a place on my “narrators to trust” shelf and in spite of a few reservations, I enjoyed her performance. Listeners are frequently frustrated when narrators are changed part-way through a series, but here, I think it’s a good switch, as Beverley A. The first two books – Love and Other Scandals and It Takes a Scandal have been available in audio format for a while, and now, the last two books are being released, but with a different narrator. Caroline Linden’s Scandalous series has been one of the most consistently enjoyable sets of historical romances to appear over the last few years, and I’ve read and enjoyed all the full-length books and novellas that make it up. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Heresy parris![]() His mission is dramatically thrown off course by a series of grisly murders and a spirited and beautiful young woman. Is genius? Is love? Weaving through the narrative is a set of peripheral figures-Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Darwin, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Walt Whitman-and a tapestry of themes spanning music, feminism, the history of science, the rise and decline of religion, and how the intersection of astronomy, poetry, and Transcendentalist philosophy fomented the environmental movement. Stretching between these figures is a cast of artists, writers, and scientists-mostly women, mostly queer-whose public contribution has risen out of their unclassifiable and often heartbreaking private relationships to change the way we understand, experience, and appreciate the universe. Figuring explores the complexities of love and the human search for truth and meaning through the interconnected lives of several historical figures across four centuries-beginning with the astronomer Johannes Kepler, who discovered the laws of planetary motion, and ending with the marine biologist and author Rachel Carson, who catalyzed the environmental movement. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And nothing Job says will change his mind. ![]() He believes Job is too traumatised by his past.
